New Direction NJ: Next steps in the fight for progress

For the past few months, New Direction NJ has worked to build a movement of residents who are sick and tired of the Trenton status quo and ready for policies that actually work for the middle class. We’ve advocated for millionaires to pay their fair share in taxes to fund priorities that benefit the rest of us, like middle-class property tax relief, tuition-free community college, investments in NJ TRANSIT, and much more.

Governor Phil Murphy and his allies have embraced this progressive agenda wholeheartedly, and won many key victories for the middle class along the way. But unfortunately, our state is being held back by an out-of-touch group of insiders bent on preventing progress and preserving a failing status quo that’s only working for the political bosses, the special interests, and the rich.

That’s why, although this year’s state budget is done, the battle to change New Jersey and make it work for the middle class will continue for as long as it takes — will you join us?

Without a true millionaire’s tax, New Jersey is being denied much needed revenue that could be used to support middle class priorities and make our state more resilient in the face of financial distress. Instead of focusing on creating sustainable new revenues, millions of dollars in new spending was crammed into the budget. Governor Murphy took corrective action today to eliminate much of this and to put away funds for a rainy day.

When all is said and done, the budget contains nearly all of the governor’s investments, and with his bold action today, he has made it more responsible. Together, we’re moving forward to the next steps in the long-term struggle to make our state work not just for the bosses and insiders, but for the middle class. Join us to do your part to make that happen.
