New Jersey Assembly to Vote Today on Voting Rights Restoration for People With Criminal Convictions

A5823 Will Restore the Vote to People on Probation and Parole

 

NEWARK– TODAY at 1 pm, the New Jersey Assembly will vote on historic legislation – A5823 – to restore the vote to 83,000 people on probation and parole in New Jersey.

On Nov. 14, just two years after the Institute and its partners launched the 1844 No More campaign, the New Jersey Assembly voted A5823 out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

After clearing the Assembly, the legislation will move to the Senate.

WHERE: New Jersey State House, 125 W. State St., Assembly Public Gallery, 2nd floor, Trenton

Background:

Passage of A5823 will restore the vote to Ron Pierce, the Institute’s Law & Democracy Fellow – a veteran, college graduate, and husband – after more than 30 years.

The 1844 No More campaign, named for the year New Jersey denied the vote to people with criminal convictions, the same year it restricted the vote to white men in its Constitution, advocates for voting rights restoration for people on parole, on probation, and in prison. The Institute will continue to advocate for the voting rights of the 19,000 people in prison, whose rights will not be restored by this bill.
