New Jersey CPAs Reach Out to More than 3,000 High School Students to Discuss Accounting Careers
ROSELAND, N.J. – More than 3,000 local area high school students heard discussions about becoming a certified public accountant (CPA) from New Jersey Society of CPAs (NJCPA) members this fall. Members presented at 115 schools as part of the NJCPA’s CPA Career Awareness program, which educates future generations about the accounting profession.
Presenters related personal experiences about becoming a CPA, discussed why they chose accounting and explained what kind of job opportunities exist for students who take this path.
“To generate interest in the accounting profession is very rewarding. Students need career advice at both the high school and college level,” said Peter Bozzo, CPA, CFO at American Continental Properties, LLC, and presenter at various New Jersey schools. “It is a great way to give back to the next generation and help get them started in accounting.”
Presenters also discussed the NJCPA Scholarship Fund, which awards $7,000 scholarships to college-bound New Jersey high school seniors who intend to major in accounting or obtain a concentration in accounting. The Fund also awards $6,000 one-year scholarships to accounting students at New Jersey colleges or universities who are currently in their junior year or in their senior year and are entering an accounting-related graduate program. Last year, the fund awarded $375,000 in scholarships to more than 70 high school and college students.
“We are thankful for all of our members’ time in communicating the many benefits of the accounting profession. The students really show an interest in the discussions,” added Pam Isenburg, member engagement coordinator at the NJCPA.
