NEW JERSEY RESIDENTS URGE THE NJBPU TO MOVE TOWARD PLANNED, OPEN-ACCESS APPROACH TO OFFSHORE WIND TRANSMISSION

ASBURY PARK – Anbaric Development Partners, a leading independent developer of electric transmission projects, today delivered 640 letters from rank and file New Jerseyans to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) in support of a planned transmission approach to offshore wind generation.

“Yesterday, under the leadership of Governor Murphy, New Jersey reached another tremendous milestone in offshore wind development with the approval of the second offshore wind solicitation by the NJBPU. As New Jersey’s offshore wind industry continues to grow, we must find the most efficient, cost-effective ways to bring that power to shore,” said Janice Fuller, President New Jersey President of Anbaric. “We are incredibly encouraged that New Jersey residents overwhelmingly recognize the economic and environmental benefits of an open-access, planned transmission approach for future offshore wind projects in our state.”

As was stated in the Energy Master Plan released earlier this year, “transmission planning is important in order to reach the state’s long-term offshore wind goals. Coordinating transmission from multiple projects may lead to considerable ratepayer savings, better environmental outcomes, better grid stability, and may significantly reduce permitting risk.” This evolution to transmission was further demonstrated in the second offshore wind solicitation, which requires submitted bids to include details as to the project’s “ability for the Project to work synergistically with any future offshore transmission grid.”

The letters urge the NJBPU to consider a planned, open-access approach in future offshore wind solicitations. This would allow the state to scale New Jersey’s offshore wind industry at a time when New Jersey desperately needs advanced economic development while reducing rate-payer costs, limiting impacts to the ocean environment and shore communities, protecting marine mammals, and minimizing disruption to the state’s fishing industry.
