The New Jersey State AFL-CIO respectfully urges you to support A1474, the Temporary Worker’s Bill of Rights in concurrence with the Governor’s recommendations.
The bill would increase accountability for staffing firms, protect temporary workers against wage theft, pay discrimination and unsafe working conditions, and improve predictability in temporary worker’s schedule.
Specifically, as recommended by the Governor, the bill requires staffing firms provide temporary workers equal pay for performing work equal to an employee in addition to requiring staffing agencies to register with the state and disclose certain information related to temporary worker paychecks. These measures help prevent staffing agency labor from being used in an attempt to break strikes and will shed light on wage theft and other unscrupulous business practices that allow staffing agencies to undercut the labor market.
The bill would empower the Department of Labor and Workforce Development with enforcement, as well as create a new private right of action for temporary workers to seek a remedy in court. These provisions will help ensure staffing agency compliance with the legislation.
We urge you to vote “yes” on approving A1474, the Temporary Worker’s Bill of Rights. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this bill, please reach out to our office at 609-989-8730. |
