New poll shows NJ voters oppose Christie-Guadagno cuts to women’s health
Newark — A poll released this morning by the nonpartisan Health Care Quality Institute and the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling shows that voters oppose Chris Christie’s and Kim Guadagno’s partisan and misguided cuts to women’s health care. In budget after budget, Christie and Guadagno eradicated funding for Planned Parenthood.
The poll shows 78 percent of New Jerseyans support state funding of women’s health programs. Further, 65 percent hold a positive view of Planned Parenthood, with 78 percent knowing that the organization also provides access to critical preventative health screenings, including those for cancer.
Phil Murphy has committed to restoring the full $7.5 million in state funding for Planned Parenthood and women’s health.
As Chris Christie’s second-in-command, Guadagno teamed up with Christie to defund Planned Parenthood throughout her 7-plus years as Lieutenant Governor. Guadagno has also said that, as governor, she would continue their policies and would not restore women’s health funding.
Because of the Christie-Guadagno cuts, six women’s health clinics have closed and family planning centers now serve 24 percent fewer patients, health professionals have noted an increase in the number of undiagnosed STDs, and more than 1 million women in New Jersey now lack access to contraceptive services and supplies.
