NEWARK PARENTS URGE COURT TO RESTORE LAWSUIT CHALLENGING NEW JERSEY’S LIFO LAWS

Oral arguments will be heard at 10:00AM on Wednesday, April 25 at the Veteran’s Courthouse in Newark

Newark, NJ –Attorneys representing the plaintiffs in HG v. Harrington will be in court Wednesday, April 25 for oral argument before the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division. They will argue that New Jersey’s quality-blind LIFO (last-in, first-out) layoff laws are unconstitutional as applied in the Newark Public School District. The plaintiffs are a group of Newark Public Schools parents seeking to enforce New Jersey’s constitutional guarantees to a thorough and efficient education. The parent-plaintiffs have alleged that the LIFO statutes violate students’ educational rights by unjustly requiring struggling districts like Newark to retain ineffective teachers, while cutting other areas of education spending or laying off more effective teachers when faced with funding deficits.

The hearing is open to the press. Oral arguments will begin at 10:00 a.m. Legal counsel for the plaintiffs will be available for Q&A following the court proceedings.
