House Republicans Vote for Tax Cuts for the Ultra-Rich and Corporations Paid for By 36 Million Middle-Class Families

NJ-7 Congressional Candidate Linda Weber’s Statement on the House Republican’s Tax Scheme

The House Republican tax scheme is not tax reform; it is a massive tax cut for corporations and the ultra-rich paid for by 36 million middle-class families. Under this scheme, by 2027, 54% of Americans will get almost nothing or see their taxes go up, including the majority of middle-class Americans who earn $100,000 or less, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation. Those hit the hardest will be individuals who are more economically vulnerable: sick Americans struggling to pay medical bills, those with dependents in nursing homes, students trying to better themselves through higher education, homeowners, and Americans residing in high-cost states such as New Jersey.

This bill is not about growing our economy by helping middle-class families, it is about ultra-wealthy donors and corporate special interests. While large corporations hoard record amounts of cash, it has become increasingly harder for the working poor and the middle class to climb the economic ladder. If this bill was really about growth, it would not eliminate or scale back important deductions such as the State and Local Tax (SALT), medical expenses, and the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which helps veterans and underserved Americans gain employment. If Republicans wanted to promote growth, they would be investing to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, to improve our public education system, to expand job training programs, and to help grow small businesses.

It is not enough for Rep. Leonard Lance to just vote “no” out of political expedience – he needs to stand up for  families in New Jersey by showing real leadership. Rep. Lance should join with Democrats in drafting genuine pro-growth tax reform that actually helps the middle class. Voters understand that a vote for Rep. Leonard Lance is a vote for Paul Ryan’s “Corporations First” agenda.
