NJ LGBTQ Leaders Applaud Biden Levine Appointment

President Biden has nominated Dr. Rachel Levine to serve as Assistant HHS Secretary for Health. A deeply experienced public servant and public health expert, she is poised to become the first openly transgender federal official to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

“The Historic choice and nomination of Dr. Rachel Levine to be Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services is brilliant on many levels,” stated Lauren Albrecht, Chair of New Jersey Democratic LGBTQ Caucus and Co-Chair NJ LGBTQ+ for Biden.

“The Biden Administration appointments truly reflect the diversity of America, and we congratulate our neighbor next door,” said Joe Forte, Vice-Chair LGBTQ Caucus and Co-Chair NJ LGBTQ+ for Biden. “We wish Dr. Levine much success in her new role.”

“President Biden and Vice President Harris have been outspoken suporters of the LGBTQ community. Dr. Levine is highly qualified for this position and would bring a lens of expertise, knowledge and depth that is critical to help improve the health of all Americans,” added Mx Shannon Cuttle, a 2020 New Jersey Biden Delegate and longtime activist and school board member in the South Orange/Maplewood district. “The 2020 election was a critical time in our country and they have kept their promise to the LGBTQ community.”

Dr. Levine is currently the Secretary of Health in Pennsylvania, leading the state’s fight against COVID-19. She is also a professor at the Penn State College of Medicine. Levine began her medical career as a pediatrician at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

Levine has previously won state Senate confirmation in Pennsylvania, including a unanimous vote in 2015 to endorse her as Pennsylvania’s physician general. She then rose to the role of Secretary of Health, also with the state Senate’s approval.
