NJ Women’s March Founder Calls on Hugin to Break Silence over Trump SCOTUS Pick
Elizabeth Meyer, founder, Women’s March on NJ:
“Now that Donald Trump has announced his nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy’s seat, it is time to take action. If Kavanaugh is confirmed, his lifetime appointment would tip the balance of the Supreme Court against basic civil, workers’, women’s, LGBTQ, and immigration rights. We do not support Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court and encourage New Jersey citizens to raise their voices.
While the majority of the country is pro-choice, Brett Kavanaugh comes from the conservative block that would threaten women’s reproductive rights. His influence could overturn Roe v. Wade, making abortion illegal, and end protections for patients with pre-existing conditions, such as pregnancy. Kavanaugh, in 2015, also stated that an employer can deny their employee access to birth control coverage if it goes against their personal beliefs.
On behalf of the 15,000 Women’s March on NJ participants, I urge Bob Hugin, who has supported multiple anti-choice GOP representatives, to follow suit and stop hiding behind Donald Trump. Hugin has stated that he would be supportive of President Trump’s pick and that the “possible nominees have been some of the most impressive jurists and lawyers in our country.” Hugin has refused to speak out against Donald Trump and continues to duck important questions. By staying silent on the issue, Hugin has chosen Donald Trump and the GOP over his support for New Jersey. At a time when women’s rights are in danger, we need someone who will stand up for what is right, not fall in line behind the president. I am proud of Senator Menendez’s strong commitment to vote no on Kavanaugh. The Senator has consistently spoken out against Donald Trump.”
