NJ Working Families Statement on Gov. Murphy’s Plans for Stronger and Fairer Economy

(NEWARK, NJ) – In response to Governor Murphy’s Monday address, outlining plans for a “stronger and fairer economy in New Jersey,” Analilia Mejia, Executive Director of NJ Working Families Alliance, issued the following statement:

“I applaud the innovative approach that Governor Murphy is taking to reshape our economy into one that works for everyone, not just the wealthy and well-connected. His holistic approach, which recognizes the intersectionality of economic growth, community development, diversity, and investment in the individual, is exactly what New Jersey needs after nearly a decade of trickle-down neglect.

Since the Great Recession of 2007, poverty rates have grown faster in New Jersey than in most U.S. States. While employment numbers are up, wages are flat, making ends meet harder than ever for New Jersey working families.  The data is clear: people don’t just need jobs, they need jobs that pay enough to survive in one of the most expensive States in the country. Governor Murphy’s commitment to reinvesting in good jobs, and in working families – be it by steadfastly advocating for a $15 minimum wage that leaves no worker behind, or providing  tuition-free community college,  loan forgiveness options, and additional job readiness training – is obvious.

The Governor’s plan is ambitious, and outlines a new, mutually beneficial relationship between State Government and the residents it serves. This platform puts working families at the forefront, and I urge legislators  to work closely with the Governor in order to make it reality.”
