NJAMHAA Honors Individuals in Recovery and those Working to Eliminate Stigma and Save Lives
September is National Recovery Month and National Suicide Prevention Month
MERCERVILLE: The New Jersey Association of Mental Health and Addiction Agencies, Inc. (NJAMHAA) is proudly joining communities across the nation in recognizing both National Recovery Month and National Suicide Prevention Month throughout September. These observances serve as critical reminders of the importance of mental health care, the strength of those in recovery, and the need for accessible, compassionate support for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
National Recovery Month celebrates the successes of those in recovery from mental health conditions and substance use disorders. It highlights the positive impact that treatment and recovery support services have on individuals, families, and communities, much like NJAMHAA’s Diverse Faces: All Are Worthy of Full Investment campaign. This year’s National Recovery Month weekly themes, outlined by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), focus on health aspects of well-being and their importance to recovery; the impact of a safe and stable living environment on recovery from mental health and substance use problems; the importance of purpose as a motivator for positive change; and how feeling a sense of belonging to a community can help people in their recovery journeys, emphasize that recovery is possible for all, and encourage everyone to spread awareness and reduce the stigma associated with these issues.
Simultaneously, National Suicide Prevention Month underscores the urgency of addressing suicide and promoting prevention efforts. Suicide remains a leading cause of death nationwide, yet it is preventable. NJAMHAA is committed to expanding public awareness, educating communities, and advocating for policies that improve mental health care access, reduce stigma, and ensure early intervention.
“As we observe National Recovery Month and Suicide Prevention Month, NJAMHAA reaffirms our dedication to promoting and advocating for high-quality mental health and substance use treatment services across New Jersey,” said Debra L. Wentz, Ph.D., President and CEO of NJAMHAA. “Our member agencies work tirelessly to offer hope and healing to individuals and families, making recovery a reality and preventing the tragedy of suicide.”
NJAMHAA encourages everyone to participate in these important initiatives by attending events, sharing resources, and supporting loved ones. Key ways to participate can be found on SAMHSA’s National Recovery Month and Suicide Prevention Month webpages.
“Through collective action, we can make a difference in the lives of those impacted by mental health challenges, substance use disorders, and suicidal ideation. This month, NJAMHAA honors the courage of individuals in recovery and those working to prevent suicide, while committing to advancing solutions that bring hope and healing to all,” Dr. Wentz stated.
