NJEA, Educators to stage State House Walk-In on Thursday

Will deliver 116,000 petition signatures demanding relief, respect

| TRENTON, NJ – Educators from around New Jersey will stage a State House walk-in on Thursday, Jan. 17 to deliver petitions gathered from educators around the state demanding relief from the crushing economic burden imposed by Ch. 78. The 2011 law imposed harsh health care premium sharing requirements on public employees along with increased pension contributions. The law also required higher pension contributions from the state, but the Christie administration reneged on that part of the law and later fought in court to ignore the state’s funding obligations.
In addition to relief from Ch. 78, NJEA members are also demanding job justice for educational support professionals (ESPs) in the form of legislation granting certain due-process rights, as well as reasonable protections from privatization while contracts are in effect. Earlier this school year, over 116,000 NJEA members signed a petition demanding action. Members participating in the walk-in will deliver those petition signatures to Gov. Phil Murphy and to the chairs of the committees that need to hear the bills dealing with those issues. They will march from the Contemporary Club at 176 W. State Street to the State House Annex and the governor’s office.
