NJEA PAC endorses Sen. Cryan in Democratic Primary

Cryan in his remarks quoted the Grateful dead: "What a long, strange trip it's been."

The NJEA Political Action Committee (NJEA PAC) has endorsed Senator Joseph Cryan (D- 20) in the
Democratic primary for LD20. Sen. Cryan is a true advocate for public education and has been a
friend of working families in his district since he was first elected.

Sen. Cryan was an early supporter of relief from Ch. 78, which imposed unsustainable health
benefits costs on school employees. Sen. Cryan recognized that Ch. 78 was a flawed law that
resulted in decreasing take-home pay for educators, threatening the long-term quality of New
Jersey’s public schools. He was an early sponsor of legislation to fix the unfairness of Ch. 78 and
remained a champion of that effort until a much better, fairer law, Ch. 44, was passed last year.

NJEA President Marie Blistan highlighted Sen. Cryan’s record and his collaborative approach. “Sen.
Cryan has been an advocate for working people, including NJEA members, in his district and across
the state. He understands that great public schools
are the foundation of a strong state, and he supports the proud professionals who make our public
schools the best in the nation. He was a leading advocate for legislation to make health care more
affordable for school employees and boards of education, something that has benefitted everyone in
New Jersey. He is willing to listen to what educators say and to work with us to strengthen our
profession and our schools. The families living in LD20 deserve to be represented by an advocate
like Sen. Cryan.”

To earn endorsement by NJEA PAC, legislative candidates must answer a questionnaire and be screened
by a committee of NJEA members from the legislative district. If the local screening committee
recommends endorsement, that recommendation must be approved by the NJEA PAC Operating Committee or
the NJEA PAC Board of Trustees,
both of which are comprised of NJEA members from across the state.
