NJGOP Condemns Edison Town Council’s Ban on the American Flag and the U.S. Constitution
Edison, NJ – The New Jersey Republican Party is outraged by the Edison Town Council’s appalling decision to ban the presence of the American flag, the U.S. Constitution, and other so-called “props” from their council meetings. This un-American ordinance reached a new low when police were asked to escort a resident from a meeting for holding an American flag.
Adding insult to injury, the ordinance was authored by none other than the law firm of Democrat NJ Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin. Speaker Coughlin must answer for this disgrace and justify his firm’s role in undermining the rights of Edison residents.
While the Council has since issued an apology, it rings hollow. Words are not enough. The NJGOP demands immediate action to repeal this disgraceful ordinance and restore respect for the principles that our nation was founded upon. “The American flag is not a ‘prop’; it’s a sacred symbol of freedom and unity,” said Sylvia Engel, Edison Republican Municipal Chair. “The Council’s actions are an insult to every American, and their apology is nothing more than damage control. Repeal the ordinance now.”
Former candidate for Edison Mayor, Keith Hahn, called the incident a disturbing overreach of power. “Silencing the residents and prohibiting them from holding the American flag or US Constitution while respectfully addressing the Council is nothing short of a total disregard for the first amendment. The ordinance needs to be repealed and the residents of Edison need to hold them accountable at the ballot box next year.”
NJGOP Chairman Bob Hugin added, “This is not a partisan issue; it’s about patriotism and protecting every citizen’s freedom of expression. The Edison Town Council’s actions are shameful, and their apology is meaningless without accountability. We will stand with the patriotic residents of Edison until this ordinance is overturned.”
The New Jersey Republican Party will continue to fight for the principles of liberty, free speech, and respect for the values that make America great.
