NJISI: Independent Monitor Peter Harvey Releases Fourth Quarterly Report
Independent Monitor Peter Harvey Releases Fourth Quarterly Report
The Independent Monitoring Team has released its Fourth Quarterly Report, which covers the reporting period of 10/1/17 through 12/31/17. The Independent Monitoring Team’s Quarterly Reports are meant to update the public on the City of Newark and the Newark Police Division’s progress with Consent Decree tasks. Please read the Fourth Quarterly Report here. The Fourth Quarterly Report will be further discussed at an upcoming meeting. Please check back for the date and location.
In 2016, a federal court approved a panel of experts — led by Independent Monitor Peter Harvey — to serve as the Independent Monitoring Team of the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Police Division (NPD), in accordance with a settlement reached between the Department of Justice and the City of Newark.
As part of the consent decree process, the NPD must reform its stop, search, and arrest policies. Previous NPD stop, search, and arrest practices were the subject of a 2014 Department of Justice Investigation. The NPD is holding a series of community forums to solicit feedback on their draft policies. The next community forum is scheduled for this Wednesday, May 9, from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at Sport Club Portuguese, located at 55 Prospect St. in Newark, to gather community feedback on NPD’s draft Arrest Policy. Please click here for a copy of the Arrest Policy and here for a copy of the Institute’s white paper summary on the Arrest Policy.
