NJPP: Agreement on State Health Exchange is Big Win for Uninsured New Jerseyans

Earlier today, the Senate and Assembly passed legislation to establish a state health care exchange. Today’s passage of A5499/S3807 is critical for the state to meet the August 1st deadline to establish a state exchange. In response to the passage of this bill, NJPP releases the following statement.

RAY CASTRO, HEALTH POLICY DIRECTOR, NEW JERSEY POLICY PERSPECTIVE:

“The last-minute agreement between Governor Murphy and Senate leadership on a state health care exchange bill is great news for the 330,000 uninsured New Jerseyans who are already eligible for Medicaid and premium subsidies. Thanks to Senate President Sweeney, it will now be more likely that the exchange will also determine eligibility for Medicaid, creating one streamlined process and maximizing federal matching funds. Passing this landmark bill was critical to getting a state exchange in place for the 2020 enrollment year. Research has shown that state exchanges are much more effective in keeping premiums down and ensuring more adults and children are covered.”
