Norcross to Announce Scholarships for NJ, PA Students Training for Construction Careers

CHERRY HILL, NJ – Today, Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 10:00 a.m., Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) will announce that North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) will be making over $100,000 in scholarships available for New Jersey and Pennsylvania students to use during the 2018-19 academic year for Rowan University’s Bachelor’s Degree Program in Construction Management.

The announcement will occur at the start of the NABTU’s “Sectors of Excellence in Apprenticeship” meeting that will explore the connections between higher education and registered apprenticeship. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor, New Jersey Department of Labor and state and national institutions will participate in the day-long series of panel discussions.

“I was an electrical apprentice and it shaped my path from construction to Congress. Many kids and teens today are suited for an apprenticeship path, like mine, but are instead pushed toward a ‘one-size-fits-all’ traditional four-year college. Our country needs plumbers and electricians, just like we need doctors and lawyers. But in order to have enough of each, we need to boost career training programs,” said Congressman Donald Norcross. “Rowan University’s program allows building trades members to receive an affordable bachelor’s degree in the construction field, which is a win-win-win – for our students, our families and our economy as a whole. NABTU is making Rowan’s program even more affordable for our local students, and in the next few years I look forward to seeing more people in South Jersey donning hardhats and securing good-paying construction jobs.”
