Norcross Statement on Allocation of CARES Act funds to NJ Colleges and Universities

CHERRY HILL, NJ – U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) released the following statement today on the U.S. Department of Education’s release of a plan for distributing $14 billion of the CARES Act funding to colleges and universities:

“New Jersey’s higher education students and institutions are facing severe economic strains, and the CARES Act funding will provide them with assistance and resources during this crisis,” said Congressman Norcross, a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor. “With half of the funding allocations for colleges and universities going towards student aid, our students will receive the relief they urgently-need. I’ll continue to work in Congress to ensure these funds are quickly delivered to South Jersey.”

The Department of Education announced on Thursday evening that $12.56 billion will be distributed to colleges based on an enrollment formula, and at least 50 percent of the amount each college receives must go to students as emergency aid grants to help cover campus expenses related to disruptions caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

Allocations for South Jersey institutions:

• Camden County College: $5,784,112
• Rowan College At Burlington County: $3,750,316
• Rowan College Of South Jersey: $6,557,641
• Rowan University: $14,471,695
• Rutgers, The State University Of New Jersey: $54,160,640
• Stockton University: $10,041,238

Earlier this week, Norcross joined Sens. Bob Menendez and Cory Booker and the entire NJ Congressional Delegation in urging the Department of Education to expedite delivery of emergency COVID-19 funding for eligible colleges and universities that continue to suffer tremendous losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
