Norcross Statement on Trump’s Iran Decision
WASHINGTON, DC – Following the announcement from President Donald Trump that he is pulling the United States out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran, Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01), member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the below statement:
“Iran must never be allowed to become a nuclear threat to the world. Not now. Not ever. Two years ago, I voted against the JCPOA because it was too narrowly focused and lacked a clear approach on preventing further destabilization in the region.
“My concerns about the deal remain and, today, I am also troubled by the current Administration’s failure to create a coherent strategy to keep the United States and Israel safe. We need an outline for a successor agreement and a plan that includes the pursuit of diplomacy, using a fully-funded, experienced diplomatic corps.
“We need to hold Iran accountable, and the United States cannot go it alone. We need to engage with an international coalition and do everything we can to ensure Americans and our allies are not threatened.”
In August 2015, Norcross laid out why he opposed the JCPOA saying, “the deal ultimately falls short of the guarantees necessary to assure the American people that it will do more good than harm.”
