Now Law: Bucco Bill Honoring New Jerseyans Entering U.S. Service Academies

Legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony Bucco which would require New Jersey’s Adjutant General to issue the State flag to residents enrolled in federal military service academies was signed into law.

“Distinguished New Jersey residents who are enrolled in a service academy have demonstrated exceptional academic ability and integrity,” said Bucco (R-25). “It is fitting for New Jersey to recognize these accomplished young men and women who have dedicated themselves to careers serving and protecting our state and our nation.”

Bucco’s legislation, S-2106, requires the Adjutant General of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMAVA) to issue the New Jersey State flag to any resident attending a U.S. service academy, including the United States Military Academy, United States Naval Academy, United States Coast Guard Academy, United States Merchant Marine Academy, or United States Air Force Academy.

“Presenting the New Jersey State Flag to service academy students from New Jersey is a small memento of our gratitude for their tremendous commitment to serving our country,” added Bucco. “I hope they will fly our State flag high and proud.”

Candidates applying to United State Service Academies go through a rigorous application process, which typically begins with a nomination by a member of Congress, or by the President or Vice President. Graduates commit to a service obligation post-graduation as an active duty military officer.
