Old Bridge Council Candidate Mark Razzoli Urges State to Reject Charter School Application

Ward 4 Candidate Mark Razzoli Urges State to Reject Charter School Application
Old Bridge – Ward 4 Council Candidate Mark Razzoli today called on the New Jersey Department of
Education to deny the Albert Einstein EnergySmart Charter School application to open a charter school
in Old Bridge. He also criticized the Old Bridge Town Council for not standing up for Old Bridge taxpayers by passing a resolution opposing the charter school.
Mr. Razzoli stated, “Old Bridge’s public schools are top notch, and we should be investing in them, not
shelling out taxpayer money for a school with connections to a shady Turkish special interest group. I am
very disappointed, but not surprised, that the Old Bridge Council is not taking the lead in opposing this
attempt to take millions of dollars out of our public schools.”
There are many reasons to oppose opening a charter school in Old Bridge, but the most important and
the simplest is that we just don’t need it. Our public schools are doing a great job serving our
community, and we should focus on helping them succeed. Opening a new school will do the opposite
of that: sapping taxpayer money that our public schools need without providing any additional benefit.
However, there are other, even more galling problems with the school. For one thing, the founders lied
on their application by using Perth Amboy PARCC Scores to falsely claim that Old Bridge’s public schools
were underperforming. This type of dishonesty should have immediately disqualified the application
from consideration.
“It’s time for the Town Council to stop the fighting between themselves and start fighting for Old
Bridge’s families and taxpayers,” Mark Razzoli said. “I hope the State and our local elected officials listen
to the residents of Old Bridge and reject the Albert Einstein Charter School’s application instead of giving
in to shady special interests who do not have our town’s best interests at heart.”
