Oroho: Time for Trenton to Get to Work on Affordability

Following the inauguration of Governor Phil Murphy today and the reorganization of the Legislature last week, Senate Republican Leader Steven Oroho said it’s time to get back to work.

“Now that the housekeeping is complete, we shouldn’t waste any time getting back to work in Trenton on efforts to make New Jersey more affordable,” said Oroho (R-24). “After the November election, the governor and legislative leaders of both parties said addressing affordability would be a priority. After all that talk, it’s time to show people some real action. Senate Republicans are ready to work.”

Oroho pointed to several areas where bipartisan agreement should be possible to provide tax relief to New Jerseyans:

• Creating a state charitable deduction to support the nonprofits that serve our communities;
• Challenging New York’s unfair taxation of New Jersey workers;
• Replenishing the UI Fund with available pandemic relief funds to stop unnecessary tax increases on small businesses;
• Revisiting pension and benefit reforms that have been discussed for nearly two decades to make the system more stable for workers and affordable for taxpayers;
• Fixing the school funding formula to make the distribution of billions of state aid more equitable; and
• Enacting sick leave reform to finally end massive retirement payouts that blow-up municipal budgets.

“We have solutions on the table that could help turn the tide on property taxes and income taxes, which consistently top the list of concerns of New Jerseyans,” added Oroho. “If the governor and legislative leadership want to work in a bipartisan fashion, we have a real opportunity to lower the cost of living in the Garden State.”
