O’Scanlon, DiMaso, Scharfenberger: Food Delivery Services Destroying Future
Killing Restaurants They Depend On
Senator Declan O’Scanlon, Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso, and Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger (R-Monmouth) today called upon food delivery services to voluntarily cap their fees at 17.5 percent.
“Right now fees running as high as 30 percent are crushing our restaurants who essentially have no choice but to pay. Delivery services are playing a critical role in allowing residents to order and support from local restaurants during the shutdown. We understand that they are providing this valuable service and appreciate all of the workers.
“While there is obviously a need to attract more delivery folks with competitive pay it seems that some services are going beyond that line and taking advantage of restaurants during this time of need. Food delivery services business have seen a spike during the pandemic as people refrain from going out to get food. We don’t want to have to implement further government mandates and interference in order to cap these fees. We want to encourage a voluntary and collaborative effort toward market solutions.
“Restaurants need to come together and communicate who the bad actors are right now, essentially boycotting services maintaining outrageous fees. If food delivery services won’t act voluntarily we will move forward with legislation, however, they should be given the opportunity to do the right thing. All facets of the business community need to come together during this pandemic.”
