Pascrell Berates Latest Corrupt Whitewashing of Trump Tax Return Coverup
PATERSON, NJ – U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09), New Jersey’s only member of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, today castigated the U.S. Treasury Department Inspector General for rubberstamping Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin’s illegal refusal to turn over Donald Trump’s tax returns to the Committee pursuant to 26 U.S.C. § 6103(f).
“The Inspector General did not assess the actual text of the Justice Department’s politically biased guidance. He didn’t look at why the Treasury Secretary went to the Justice Department when the IRS found no legal reason to deny Congress. He didn’t even bother to answer why the White House is interfering in a simple IRS process. Taken together, it is impossible to take this report seriously,” said Rep. Pascrell, who has led Congress’s drive to obtain the Trump tax returns for over three years. “The law is crystal clear and unchallenged for nearly a century. Steve Mnuchin is breaking that law by defying Congress. To claim otherwise requires a complete perversion of the law and of Congress’s sacrosanct Article I oversight powers.
“Our federal government, including our once-sacred Justice Department, is shielding a corrupt and crooked executive from a sliver of sunlight or a hint of accountability. I will never, ever give up until the law is enforced and Trump’s tax returns are brought out into the beautiful light of day.”
