Pascrell Condemns Continued Congressional Republican Insurrectionism

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) today condemned recent statements by a prominent Republican congresswoman in support of violent insurrection, as well as reports confirming that in 2021, several Republican congressmembers conspired with the Trump White House to overturn the 2020 election with violence.

“Make no mistake: these sitting Republican members conspired to violently overthrow the government,” said Rep. Pascrell. “One of them said just this weekend in a public forum that she would have armed the Capitol rioters. This congresswoman is arguably the most influential member of her caucus. We cannot sugarcoat any of this: these Republicans wanted to light our constitution on fire by installing Donald Trump as a dictator.

“I was the first Democrat in Congress to invoke Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment. Anyone who supports overthrowing the government is a traitor who has violated the Constitution and shouldn’t be seated in Congress. That was true on January 6, 2021, and it is true today. These members of Congress continue to represent a clear and present danger to the future of American democracy. They have not given up. We cannot look away.”

Rep. Pascrell has led the fight in Congress against the rising threat of illiberalism. On December 11, 2020, Pascrell invoked section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment which forbids seditionists from holding public office urged Speaker Nancy Pelosi to refuse to seat 126 House Republicans who supported a lawsuit seeking to overturn the election – weeks before January 6, 2021.
