Pascrell Hails Nonprofit Security Grant Funding

Budget deal includes priority Pascrell championed

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-N.J.-09) issued a statement following the passage by the House of Representatives of a budget bill that includes $640 million for the Urban Area Security Initiative, a figure $10 million above FY2018 funding and $191.2 million above what the President had requested. In total, the Nonprofit Security Grant Program received $50 million in funding, and an additional $10 million was allocated to the non-Urban Area Security Initiative grant program.

“As the threat of domestic terrorism grows, protecting our communities and religious organizations remains a paramount priority for Congress. Today’s budget deal provides critical support to ensuring their security,” said Rep. Pascrell. “Antisemitic threats and incidents have become especially troubling across the nation. After my colleagues raised the importance of providing adequate money for these security programs, the budget bill comes through with funding to keep our religious centers and communities protected.”

Rep. Pascrell is one of Congress’s leaders for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program. In March 2018, Pascrell led a bipartisan letter of 106 House members calling on the leaders of the House Appropriations Committee to maintain funding for the UASI Nonprofit Security Grant Program. Today’s budget deal provides the exact level of robust funding Rep. Pascrell and his colleagues requested. In April 2017, Pascrell led 110 of his colleagues calling for funding the NPSG program at $50 million in the FY2018 Homeland Security Appropriations bill. In December, 2015, Pascrell helped obtain $20 million in increased funding for the NSGP. In August 2014, Pascrell secured $225,000 in Nonprofit Security Grants to Hawthorne, Englewood, and Teaneck, New Jersey.
