Pascrell Reappointed Top Democrat on Oversight Panel

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) was today reappointed to be the top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight. Pascrell served as Chairman of the panel in the 117th Congress.

“I am humbled to be reappointed as the top Democrat on our critical Ways and Means Oversight panel and thank my colleagues for their trust,” said Rep. Pascrell. “On this committee, Democrats will continue to fight for a crackdown on wealthy tax cheats, a functional IRS, the closing of loopholes that favor big business and capitalist tycoons, and the end of our unfair two-tier tax system. Where committee Republicans strive towards these goals, I will eagerly work beside them; where they don’t, I will keep them honest and hold them accountable. I can’t wait to get to work.”

As Chairman in the last Congress, Pascrell made the Oversight Subcommittee a hive of activity in a host of areas, including dysfunction and chaos at the IRS, wealthy tax abuse of tax shelters and tax loopholes, corruption within the Trump White House and Trump Treasury Department, probing exorbitant coaching salaries at college that enjoy federal tax benefits, investigating price gouging by oil and gas companies, and other subjects.

During the 117th Congress, Pascrell convened hearings on closing the exorbitant tax gap, making higher education more affordable, expanding housing access, abuse in the opportunity zone program, domestic tax havens, improving IRS customer service, and the need for tax fairness. Chairman Pascrell also released two investigative reports. The first reveals widespread executive profiteering, stock buybacks, and gas gouging by large oil companies awash in record-setting profits. The second details the findings of Pascrell’s year-long investigation into exorbitant college coaching contracts given by schools which enjoy federal tax benefits.

Pascrell became top Democrat on the panel on September 22, 2020, following the passing of the late Georgia Congressman and civil rights hero John Lewis.
