Pascrell, Sherrill Joint Statement on Lack of SALT Relief in Tax Bill
Pascrell, Sherrill Joint Statement on Lack of SALT Relief in Tax Bill
WASHINGTON, DC – Tonight, U.S. Reps. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) and Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ-11) issued the following joint statement on the lack of state and local tax (SALT) deduction relief in the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act (H.R. 7024):
“We are supporting this legislation to strengthen the child tax credit. Nonetheless, we are deeply dissatisfied that once again restoration of middle class relief is excluded. Despite pervasive half-truths and misunderstandings, the state and local tax deduction is a lifeline for middle class Americans and their families. It is also a vital resource for first responders. As our police and firefighters have attested, passage of the Republican Tax Scam’s SALT cap has done grievous harm to public safety. When this bill was recently considered in committee, Congressman Pascrell offered an amendment to provide real middle class SALT relief and every Republican on the panel voted no and blocked its inclusion. Congresswoman Sherrill has also introduced standalone legislation to eliminate the SALT deduction cap for 99 percent of New Jersey families and to remove the marriage penalty. We will continue to explore ways to restore middle class tax relief and will not give up until it happens.”
