PATERSON MAYOR SAYEGH CALLS FOR THE RESIGNATION OF FIRST WARD COUNCILMAN MICHAEL JACKSON

Paterson, NJ – During the October 3, 2023, Municipal Council Workshop Meeting, Councilman Jackson’s behavior reached a disturbing peak. Videos captured Jackson aggressively confronting 5th Ward Councilman Luis Velez. The alarming footage shows Jackson threateningly standing over a seated Velez, pointing fingers and making threats. Paterson police officers had to intervene when Jackson pushed one of them. Swift action by the officers and the intervention of concerned community members prevented further escalation.

This recent incident is part of a troubling history. Jackson’s actions during Municipal Council Meetings have repeatedly caused concern. His confrontations with Paterson’s Business Administrator Kathleen Long, threats to the Chief Financial Officer Javier Silva, derogatory remarks against various city officials, and aggressive behavior towards former Council President Shahin Khalique are now well-documented. Jackson also faces allegations of election fraud and accusations of physically assaulting a Paterson business owner.

Moreover, in May 2023, the Attorney General’s Office seized Councilman Jackson’s phone as part of an ongoing investigation. This significant development comes on the heels of Jackson’s indictment in March 2021 for election fraud, further casting shadows over his role as a city official.

Mayor Sayegh, standing firmly with law enforcement and resolved to work closely with the council, remarked, “Councilman Jackson’s behavior is deeply disturbing and utterly unacceptable. No one in City Hall should be subjected to intimidation or violence. His actions are almost incomprehensible.Paterson deserves representatives who uphold values of respect, professionalism, and civility. Jackson’s consistent disregard for these values undermines our community’s trust in its elected officials.”

Beyond calling for Jackson’s resignation, Mayor Sayegh is committed to working alongside the council on potential censure or other disciplinary actions that reflect the gravity of Jackson’s conduct.

The Mayor’s stance is supported by a growing number of concerned community members, elected officials, and city leaders. The message is clear: Paterson seeks leadership without the distractions and disruptions caused by Councilman Jackson.

Paterson is a city built on its diversity, unity, resilience, and community spirit. Mayor Sayegh remains dedicated to working with the council and law enforcement to ensure the safety, professionalism, and dignity that the residents of Paterson deserve.
