PBA TO PROTEST COUNTY COMMITTEE MTG

Calls for Musso and Castellini to Oppose Defunding Jail,

Cancelling Capital Construction Project

(VINELAND, NJ) – PBA Local 231 President Victor Bermudez today announced that his members will be protesting the Cumberland County Democratic Committee’s meeting this evening.

“The Democratic Party wants to take our jobs, benefits, and pensions, and they want to do it during a pandemic,” said Victor Bermudez, president. “We’re going to raise our voices, we’re going to fight, and we’re not going away.”

According to a story in The Press of Atlantic City on August 20, Cumberland County plans on closing the county jail by year end.

“Freeholders Musso and Castellini can stand-up for us and oppose defunding the jail,” said Bermudez. “That’s called leadership and that’s exactly what we need at this moment.”

Under a plan submitted to the state of New Jersey on August 19, the county plans on laying off 121 full-time county employees or 10-percent of the county workforce. Of the 121 employees, 105 of them are PBA Local #231 members.

“Laying off 10 percent of the county workforce in the midst of a pandemic is inexcusable,” said Bermudez. “And using a pandemic to score political points with voters during election season is outright disgusting.”

“Our members have heart – and they will fight till the end,” said Bermudez.
