Senator Joe Pennacchio was featured as a guest on the Dom Giordano radio program where he discussed numerous studies that show hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) has great potential for controlling the spread of COVID-19 and the severity of infections.

“These drugs are being hoarded. Doctors are writing themselves prescriptions and prescribing it for their patients and loved ones. They are on the front line of against this disease,” Pennacchio told Giordano’s listeners on WPHT 1210-AM. “The people that are on the front line are ahead of the curve. They know what HCQ can do.”

The Associated Press reported “Malaria drugs’ promise for coronavirus spurs hope, shortages,” and The New York Times today reported that states say some doctors are stockpiling coronavirus drugs for their own use.

Pennacchio released a statement of support yesterday from almost 70 doctors who signed on to advocate for the off-label use of the anti-malarial drug for the treatment and amelioration of the spread of COVID-19.

“The doctors themselves are getting this, but the leadership in the public advisory communities, they got to catch up,” Pennacchio said.

HCQ has a 70-year track record as a safe and effective malaria drug, and also as a treatment for lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. A major study of the effectiveness of HCQ against the coronavirus is scheduled to begin  tomorrow in New York State.
