PEOPLE’S PREP JOINS TOGETHER WITH STUDENTS, PARENTS, EDUCATORS, AND NEWARK’S ART COMMUNTY FOR
4thANNUAL STUDENT ART SHOW

Newark’s Only Independent Public Charter High School to Celebrate
the Artistic Talents of its Student Body

[Newark, New Jersey – April 3, 2019] Inspired by the talents of its own students, a respect for Newark’s long-treasured artistic community, and a desire to strengthen the voice of Newark-based student artists, People’s Prep, Newark’s only independent public charter high school, will hold its 4th Annual Student Art Show on Thursday, April 4th.

The event, which will take place at Index Art Center in downtown Newark, will bring together students, parents, educators, and members of Newark Arts, the city’s cultural anchor institution which supports over 60 arts organizations.  The show will feature handcrafted, unique canvas paintings and creations from students, that will be available for purchase via a silent auction, with select pieces sold through a live auction format.  Proceeds will benefit the Friends of People’s Prep and its mission to provide financial support to the students, faculty, and alumni of People’s Preparatory Charter School of Newark.

“People’s Prep’s annual Art Show has become a vital part of Newark’s cultural landscape, and we are thrilled to see the event blossom since its inception,” stated People’s Prep Founder, Jess Rooney.  “Each year, we bring together the Newark community and celebrate our students’ creative freedom and voice.  Whether we are witness to the next Mickalene Thomas, Jean-Michel Basquiat, or Kehinde Wiley, or simply a student who needs to share their emotions and experiences through art, People’s Prep deeply believes that every Newark child should be provided great opportunities.  This event is a moment to showcase the important artistic history traditions of our city and create a needed platform for the city’s future artists, and we hope see the many interested in art and culture in attendance.”

“This spring, People’s Prep’s first high school class will be graduating from college.  Like me, these are students who likely would have never been able to attend college without a school like People’s Prep,” stated People’s Prep Senior Immanuela Antwi.  “As someone who will be attending college next year, a big part of my academic success has been People’s Prep commitment to provide real, true experiences to its students.  Whether it be the opportunity to attend college or ensuring there are dedicated high school art classes available, People’s Prep provides opportunities never imagined in a public school.  The school continues to open doors for so many Newarkers and, as someone who has discovered their passion for art at People’s Prep, I am grateful to be empowered me to express myself.

“It’s amazing to see the depth of arts management and art presentation by the youth of People’s Prep Charter School.  We salute them on their show at the Index Art Center,” stated Jeremy Johnson, Executive Director, Newark Arts.
