Perth Amboy on the Verge of Losing Police Accreditation

Perth Amboy, N.J. (September 4, 2020) As communities throughout the nation riot and protest for social justice and higher levels of accountability from their police departments, Perth Amboy is on the verge of losing its accreditation- the very tool that can provide accountability and transparency.

“I fully support police officers and the difficult work that they are asked to do each and every day, holding them to a standard of accountability is completely consistent.” Vas stated emphatically.

Police Director, Mayor Diaz, and Police Chief Roman McKeon must accept responsibility for creating a ticking time bomb within the department by failing to maintain standard operating procedures and current rules and regulations. The efficient management of the critical service provided by police officers of our City demand that they do their jobs.

“Millions of taxpayer dollars are being wasted settling lawsuits against police officers that cannot be defended because these standards and regulations are not being revised or updated,” stated Vas.

“It’s demoralizing for qualified officers that Diaz regards the police department as her own political club when she promotes someone not currently certified by civil service to an important position within the police department simply because he serves as her campaign manager for her re-election. By doing so, she has also neglected the very duties she swore to uphold,” added Vas “Diaz and McKeon are not alone in their dereliction of duties. Current council members are equally complicit as they have an obligation to hold her to the same standard that every department director is held to. They need to do their jobs, too,” lamented Vas.
