Say Vote Reflects Confidence in Phillipsburg’s Future

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ (June 6, 2019) – Phillipsburg Mayor Steve Ellis and Town Council Candidates JP Stettner and Lee M. Clark, have released the following statement following their decisive victory in Phillipsburg’s Democratic primary Tuesday.

“The results at the polls Tuesday were a victory for the people of Phillipsburg who voted for the future of their community, for progress, and to restore the rule of law to our town government. We are extremely grateful to Phillipsburg’s Democratic voters for turning out at the polls and making sure their voices were heard, and to our campaign’s supporters and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this victory possible. We are deeply honored to have your support and could not have done this without you.

With their vote on Tuesday, Phillipsburg’s Democrats overwhelmingly rejected the obscene and vile campaign of hate that has disgraced and embarrassed our community, victimized innocent people, attacked families and children, and stalled the economic progress and rebirth our community desperately needs. Our voters told the world and the media that the negativity of a few people blinded by self-interest does not in any way reflect or represent the heart, soul, spirit and hope of the people of Phillipsburg.

Phillipsburg is facing many challenges, but is also a community with tremendous potential, poised on the brink of incredible opportunity. With their votes on Tuesday, the people of Phillipsburg have told us that they want to seize those opportunities. They have asked us to fight for them and a future of prosperity and security for their families. This election was the first step in our community coming together to work toward a shared vision of our future, and we are committed to the effort of uniting and healing our community.”

Phillipsburg Mayor Steve Ellis won roughly 60 percent of the vote in the hotly contested Democratic primary, earning 541 votes to challenger Mark Lutz’ 339, according to unofficial results.  Ellis’ running mates, JP Stettner and Lee M. Clark, running for two seats on the Town Council, received 573 and 499 votes respectively; their challengers, Matt Scerbo and Vicky Mendes Branch, received 351 and 309 votes, respectively.  Ellis, Stettner and Clark were the endorsed candidates of the Phillipsburg Democratic Committee and the Warren County Democratic Committee.
