Vote-By-Mail Returns Show Big Victory Likely for Piscataway’s True Blue Democrats

Wahler, Cahill, Shah & Scott-McCullum of Column B Winners of Democratic Primary

July 17, 2020 – The vote-by-mail ballot returns in the July 7th Piscataway Democratic primary show a wide lead for the mainstream Piscataway Democratic Organization (PDO) candidates of Column B over the local progressive group slate.

As of today, the Middlesex County Board of Elections is showing Mayor Brian C. Wahler and Township Council members Gabrielle Cahill, Kapil K. Shah and Chanelle Scott-McCullum at or around 65% of the vote. With only provisional ballots yet to be counted, the Column B team expects to be renominated with resounding approval.

“This is another clear and convincing win for consensus and community,” PDO Chair and former Township Mayor Ted Light said. “Thousands of Democratic voters recognized that encouraging new businesses to move into the Township is a wise strategy for the future of Piscataway and were not swayed by progressive negativity and division.”

Many voters were impressed with the incumbents building the Township’s $32 million community center at no cost to residents’ tax monies, maintaining an “AA+ stable” bond rating and last year being named by Money Magazine to its Top 100 Best Places to Live in America for the fourth time. As a result, the renominations of Brian C. Wahler for Mayor and Gabrielle Cahill, Kapil K. Shah and Chanelle Scott- McCullum for At-large Council seats appears imminent.

The PDO now looks forward to putting Joe Biden in the White House and returning Cory Booker and Frank Pallone, Jr. to Capitol Hill.

“With the primary settled, it remains to be seen if the local progressives will join the effort to elect all of the Democratic nominees in November,” PDO Vice Chair and former Middlesex County Freeholder Camille Fernicola said. “Regardless of what this small handful of people will do, we know that the large, diverse and unified Democratic Party of this Township will work hard over the next few months to move our community and country forward.”
