Three women and one man to be honored for their contributions to the state;

Six undergraduate students will be presented with the 2022 Young Latina Leadership Scholarships 

NEW JERSEY-June 6, 2022– Lupe FUND, Inc. will host their signature Power of Women event on Wednesday, June 8, at the Brownstone, located at 351 West Broadway, in Paterson. The event, which began in 2004 recognizes and celebrates prominent Latina women who are making a significant impact across New Jersey through their vital work. The annual event returns after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

PIX11, your home for the best in tri-state news, weather, and more will join LUPE Fund, Inc. at the event. Six-time Emmy Award-Winning Reporter Monica Morales, host of “Monica Makes It Happen,” which helps New York and New Jersey residents in need, with a focus on public housing, will emcee the event.

This year’s honorees include Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz, the highest-ranking Latina legislator in NJ; Executive Director at the League of Women Voters of NJ Jesse Burns; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex; Hudson and Union Counties CEO Carlos Lejnieks; and NJ Office of New Americans Director Johanna Calle.

“I cannot think of a better way to celebrate 19 years of empowering, educating and engaging Latinas in NJ,” said President of LUPE Iveth Mosquera. She adds, “LUPE’s role in NJ has never been more important than now. This year’s honorees exemplify leadership, courage, and compassion. On behalf of the LUPE board of trustees, we sincerely thank them for defending democracy, promoting equality, and standing up for the rights of all NJ residents.”

Additionally, at the Power of Women event, six deserving undergraduate Latina students will be presented with the 2022 Young Latina Leadership Scholarships. The recipients will have displayed academic excellence, leadership, and have been civically engaged in their communities. To date, LUPE Fund has awarded more than $85,000 since 2011 to support Latina students’ education.

One of the awards is the inaugural Peggy Anastos Scholarship, which honors Ms. Anastos, a longtime advocate and activist for the Hispanic community in New Jersey. She serves as the Advisor to the LUPE organization.
