Jannie Chung and Annie Hausmann for Assembly in LD 39

Group Praises Candidates’ Commitment to Women’s Health

Trenton – The 39^th Legislative District candidates Linda Schwager, Jannie Chung and Annie Hausmann received the endorsement of Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey at a State House rally today for their commitment to protecting women’s health.

“In 2009, New Jersey elected an anti-choice Governor who immediately eliminated funding for reproductive healthcare for his own political gain,” said Christine Sadovy, the Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey. “Governor Christie touted himself as ‘the first governor to defund Planned Parenthood.'”

Candidates Schwager, Chung and Haussmann have pledged to restore resources for women’s health.  In 2010, the Christie budget slashed support for breast cancer screenings and vital family planning services. With Planned Parenthood funding reduced by $7.5 million each year, breast and cervical cancer rates have risen significantly and many women throughout the state no longer have access to the care they need. The Christie budget was supported by incumbent state senator Gerry Cardinale, the longest-sitting senator in New Jersey. Meanwhile, Assembly members Auth and Schepisi have failed to support restoring the funding, including on five separate occasions Assemblywoman Schepisi had an opportunity to do so.

“Ensuring that women and families have access to life-saving cancer screenings and affordable healthcare should not be a Republican or Democratic issue,” said Linda Schwager. “Time and again, Gerry Cardinale, Holly Schepisi and Robert Auth have failed women and families in our district.”

“Our district deserves leaders who will put their health and safety of families before political gain,” said Jannie Chung. “The funding cuts have been a disaster for our state that the vast majority of residents here oppose.”

“The services that Planned Parenthood provides save lives,” said Annie Hausmann. “We are proud to accept this endorsement and will fight on behalf of families in the district.”

Linda Schwager, Jannie Chung and Annie Hausmann are running in the 39th Legislative District which is comprised of 23 municipalities throughout Bergen and Passaic Counties.
