Supporters rally in Newark before first gubernatorial debate
NEWARK, NJ — Today, Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey (PPAFNJ) held a pre-debate rally in front of NJPAC in Newark to show support for Phil Murphy — the only candidate who supports women’s reproductive health and rights unequivocally. Wearing hot pink t-shirts and carrying signs, stickers, buttons, and condoms, supporters engaged with passersby to make sure their message was heard loud and clear: Phil Murphy is the candidate for women.
“The Christie-Guadagno administration has left a terrible legacy on women’s health in New Jersey,” said Christine Sadovy, Legislative and Political Director with PPAFNJ. “We are out here to protect women’s health by electing Phil Murphy, who will ensure that women have access to the reproductive health care we need.”
Murphy is running on the pledge to be a strong leader for reproductive rights and economic justice for women. Guadagno opposes funding for Planned Parenthood and other family planning providers. While Guadagno claims to be “pro-choice,” she wants to withhold funds from Planned Parenthood because the organization provides safe and legal abortion care.
“The future of our health is on the ballot,” said Sadovy. “Breast cancer, cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases are rising in New Jersey. We need a governor who will address this public health crisis head-on and defend our reproductive freedom at all costs.”
As the only candidate who has promised to protect Planned Parenthood and other family planning providers in the wake of federal attacks against health care, Murphy has stated he will work to restore and expand funding that was slashed in the past seven and a half years—funding that will help address the alarming increases in STDs and cancer cases.
During the debate, Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey supporters hosted volunteer-led house parties in homes across the state. At these house parties, friends and neighbors gathered to watch the debate live and discuss the issues at stake in this election. Several dozen house parties took place across the state, from Sussex to Cape May counties.
Tonight’s events were the first in a series. Women’s reproductive health supporters will also gather at rallies and watch parties around the upcoming debates on October 16th and 18th. Photos of tonight’s events will be available at https://www.facebook.com/ PPActionNJ/.
