Rep. Payne, Jr. Announces District to Receive $10.8 Million for Head Start and Heart Research

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. announced today that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded New Jersey’s 10th District roughly $10.8 million in grants.  The department said the district would receive a $10.2 million grant to support head start projects in Newark and a roughly $600,000 grant for research on heart and vascular diseases at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. was delighted to hear about the grants.

“I want to thank the Department of Health and Human Services for this funding because these are two vital programs in my district,” said Congressman Payne, Jr. “Head Start has helped thousands of children from low-income households to improve their reading and writing skills significantly.  In addition, we need to study heart and vascular diseases because they are the leading cause of death in our country.  I know these grants will be well spent and could save our country millions of dollars in the future.”
