Rep. Sherrill Delivers Critical Funding for the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris’ Youth Suicide Prevention Services

Parsippany, NJ– Today, at the Morris County Mental Health and Addiction Coalition’s Legislative Breakfast, Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) announced that the Mental Health Association (MHA) of Essex and Morris, has received the final award notice for a $300,000 grant to support their youth suicide prevention services. This SAMHSA funding was secured by the Congresswoman as one of ten Community Projects she submitted in the House Appropriations Committee Fiscal Year 2022 bill.

Earlier this year, Rep. Sherrill hosted a panel discussion with MHA to discuss the direct federal funding secured by Rep. Sherrill for a pilot project for suicide prevention services targeted to students in schools in NJ-11’s four counties. Watch the livestream here.

“As a mom of four, I am deeply concerned about the mental health crisis facing our children, particularly following the additional stress of the pandemic,” said Rep. Sherrill. “So I am thrilled to see this funding that I secured for the suicide prevention services at the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris awarded to increase outreach in our schools and community organizations. The MHA has long been at the forefront of caring for our mental well-being here in North Jersey. I want to thank Bob Davison, and everyone at MHA of Essex & Morris, for promoting safe, hopeful, and healthy communities in North Jersey.”

“It’s gratifying to know that families in the 11th District have a Congresswoman in Washington who understands the importance of mental health and suicide prevention. Congresswoman Sherrill not only understands that mental health is public health, she moved into action and secured these critical resources. These services will help real people in real time. Frankly, lives will be saved as a result of this investment. Congresswoman Sherrill’s leadership on suicide prevention in New Jersey is a big deal. It matters and we deeply appreciate it,” said Bob Davison, CEO of the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris.

The funding will be used for suicide prevention services, which are designed to provide specific presentations on suicide prevention for schools. The project will include a media campaign to increase awareness regarding mental health with information on how and where to find help. These services can also be provided to the greater community, including parents, family members, houses of worship, and colleges in Essex, Morris, Passaic, and Sussex Counties.
