Rep. Sherrill Signs on to Equality Act

Bill amends existing civil rights laws to include LGBTQ Americans

Washington, DC — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill announced this afternoon her co-sponsorship of H.R. 5, the Equality Act. The Equality Act amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in education, employment, housing, credit, federal jury service, public accommodations, and the use of federal funds.

“I want my kids to grow up in a world where everybody gets a fair shot,” said Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill. “New Jersey has led the way on equal treatment for our LGBTQ community, but across the country it is still legal to discriminate against LGBTQ Americans. It is past time for Congress to put laws on the books that ensure all Americans have access to the same rights and opportunities, regardless of sexual orientation or who they choose to love. I’m proud to co-sponsor the Equality Act.”
