Rep. Sherrill Votes Against Attacks on Women’s Reproductive Freedom

Washington, DC– This week, Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) voted against two pieces of anti-abortion legislation. House Republicans wasted no time in the 118th Congress in launching attacks on women’s reproductive freedom as part of their commitment to criminalizing abortion nationwide with no exceptions.

“Republicans in Congress have made themselves clear: targeting women’s reproductive rights is at the top of their priority list,” said Rep. Sherrill. “I proudly voted against uniformed members of Congress dictating how doctors practice medicine and put Republicans in Congress between women and their trusted doctors. In the 118th Congress, I will continue to fight for women’s access to reproductive health care and the right to make choices about our own bodies.”

The so-called Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act threatens criminal prosecution for healthcare workers and forces providers to act against their best medical judgment. It also robs parents of their power and agency when making life-altering decisions.

House Republicans also brought to the floor a House resolution that condemns violence towards anti-abortion organizations while ignoring the mounting violence and threats against people who provide abortion health services. According to the National Abortion Federation, assaults have risen from 15 in 2018 to 123 in 2021; stalking has increased by 600% since 2020; and bomb threats saw an 80% increase in comparison to previous years.

In response to these attacks on reproductive freedom, Congresswoman Sherrill became an original cosponsor of a resolution that condemns political violence in all forms, regardless of policy stance on reproductive rights. It also denounces attacks against healthcare facilities, personnel, and patients, emphasizing that everyone should be able to access reproductive health services without the fear of violence. She also became an original cosponsor of the Healthcare Providers’ Safety Act, which provides grant funding to healthcare providers to enhance their physical and cyber security in order to keep personnel and patients safe.
