Rep. Sherrill Votes for NO BAN Act, Reaffirming Founding Values of Religious Freedom

Washington DC – Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) voted yesterday for H.R. 1333, the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act, which she co-sponsored, to uphold religious freedom and protect the Muslim community in NJ-11 and across the country.

“Religious freedom sits at the core of who we are as Americans. I was deeply disturbed when, not a week into his term in 2017, the previous president signed an executive order barring people in majority-Muslim countries from entering the United States,” said Rep. Sherrill. “I’ve taken a number of oaths in my life, first in the Navy, then in the US Attorney’s Office, and now as a Member of Congress. That executive order was a direct attack on the founding principles and values I swore to uphold. The NO BAN Act turns a new page in our country and reaffirms our values, and I was pleased to cosponsor and vote for this critical legislation. Following President Biden’s executive order ending the ban, today we moved to ensure no future administration could take this kind of bigoted action again.”

The NO BAN Act prohibits religious discrimination in various immigration-related decisions. It allows for exceptions when the U.S. State Department determines credible threats to U.S. interests with a 48-hour reporting requirement to Congress.

Rep. Sherrill also co-sponsored and voted to pass the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act in July 2020.
