Rep. Watson Coleman Statement on Trump Shutdown

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) released the following statement in response to the government shutdown due to a lapse in funding:

“Every day it becomes more and more clear that Republicans’ dysfunction runs so deep that they’re unable to manage even the most basic functions of government.  Democrats aren’t making irrational demands outside of the will of the people; the majority of Americans want to protect Dreamers, fund essential health programs, and keep the government open. It’s been made clear – if Republicans put up consensus legislation to fix issues like these, it will pass overwhelmingly with bipartisan support.

This government shutdown was not only avoidable but a manufactured crisis for just two reasons: a hardheaded Republican Congress that prioritizes tax cuts for the wealthy and stripping healthcare from millions, and the sheer ineptitude and hatefulness of their President Donald Trump.”
