Representative Sherrill Applauds Biden Administration Announcement of Government Wide Effort to Advance Offshore Wind

New Jersey Will Continue to Play Key Role in Fight Against Climate Change, Serve as Hub of East Coast Wind Production

Parsippany, NJ — Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), Chairwoman of the Environment Subcommittee of Science, Space, and Technology Committee, today praised President Joe Biden and the entire Biden Administration for their efforts to advance renewable energy production. At a White House forum, leaders of the Biden Administration, including the Secretaries of Energy, Commerce, and Transportation, joined state leaders, representatives of the offshore wind industry, and labor leaders to discuss a major expansion of the current offshore wind capacity.

“As one of the nation’s largest investors in offshore wind, New Jersey has been leading the way on renewable energy as we collectively try to combat a climate crisis,” said Rep. Sherrill. “New Jerseyans know we can tackle climate change, create good paying jobs, and ensure our children’s future all at the same time. That’s why we will continue to be a leader in America’s effort to combat this global problem and why I’m applauding the measures President Biden and his administration announced yesterday. This commitment is crucial to finally prioritizing the transition to clean energy and ensures that New Jersey will play a key role in this space as we head towards the future.”

According to the Department of Interior, at yesterday’s forum several projects related to New Jersey were announced, including the identification of a Wind Energy Area (WEA) in the New York Bight between Long Island and the New Jersey Coast and the announcement of a Notice of Intent (NOI) to move forward with an Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Ocean Wind, LLC that would power 500,000 homes across New Jersey.

Rep. Sherrill has been a proponent of expanding offshore wind to help tackle the climate crisis throughout her time in Congress. As Chairwoman of the Environment Subcommittee on the Science, Space, and Technology Committee, she has used her position to advocate for the expansion of this crucial source of green energy and fought to include an amendment to the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that optimizes the approval process for wind energy projects near military installations in an effort to streamline our country’s efforts to pursue sustainable energy.
