Stockton, NJ (March 9, 2017) – ReThink Energy NJ today released the following statement in response to a PSEG spokesperson confirming that the company is seeking to sell its share of the PennEast pipeline:

“PSEG is clearly concerned about owning a piece of this project. The other companies behind PennEast – New Jersey Natural Gas, Elizabethtown Gas, and South Jersey Gas – should follow PSEG’s lead on this.” said Tom Gilbert, campaign director of ReThink Energy NJ and New Jersey Conservation Foundation.

“PSEG’s efforts to get out of PennEast are welcomed by thousands of New Jersey citizens who oppose PennEast,” Gilbert continued. “Not only would PennEast damage tax-payer preserved open space, and pollute our streams and drinking water with arsenic, but it would force consumers to pay more for an unneeded pipeline.”

“PSEG’s move to exit is significant, shows this project is in trouble, and reflects the growing opposition, delays and mounting problems with the project. PennEast would only benefit a few private energy companies, but consumers and our communities would bear the costs of the project. The pipeline is not in the best interests of New Jerseyans, nor is it consistent with the clean energy future they want according to polls of voters in the state.”

“As we’ve seen repeatedly, New Jersey does not want and does not need the PennEast pipeline, despite what its ads say. Instead of redundant gas infrastructure, New Jersey needs renewable energy projects, which create three times as many jobs and deliver clean, abundant, homegrown energy.”
