Rev. Charles Boyer’s Statement on the Attorney General’s Use of Force Initiatives

Grewal

Earlier this year we held hearings throughout New Jersey to discuss the disproportionate use of force from law enforcement on Black people. The community overwhelmingly demanded accountability and transparency. We are encouraged by the steps Attorney General Gurbir Grewal and his office is taking to address many of those concerns. The outline presented today to codify the protocols for the independent prosecutor law, revamp the internal affairs process, update training, cooperate with communities, further transparency, and increase accountability, can only be seen as progress. General Grewal has outreached multiple times and met with us to discuss and incorporate several of the communities’ priorities. While we recognize this is far from a panacea we also recognize its significance as a starting point. We look forward to continuing in the cooperative spirit the Attorney General’s office has displayed towards a more just New Jersey.
