Rice Statement in Support of Senator Singleton’s Campaign Disclosure Legislation

NJ Senator Ronald Rice supports Linden Mayor Derek Armstead's objection to NJ Senator Nick Scutari's use of funds from the campaign of Jerry Green, who died last year, to fund political activities. Jerry Green was the first black Union County Democratic Committee, and Rice argues that the money should be used to do something for Green.

Rice Statement in Support of Senator Singleton’s Campaign Disclosure Legislation

TRENTON – Senator Ronald Rice (D-Essex) issued the following statement in support for Senator Troy Singleton’s (D-Burlington) campaign financial disclosure legislation:

“We have to keep dark money out of politics, it’s plain and simple. Dark money allows for the wealthy and powerful to control our political system while the poor are devoid of any opinion and representation. Transparency is one of the most important characteristics we need in politics. This is why I gladly stand by Senator Singleton in support of his financial disclosure bill. I also commend Senate President Sweeney and Governor Murphy for enthusiastically endorsing the bill, it is unified leadership like this that will help fix the problem of dark money in politics.

“Last year I introduced two pieces of legislation, S-2228 and S-3199, which would create greater transparency among business entities and health care consultants and carriers. Like in politics, we put a lot of trust in businesses and in health care, we expect them to be transparent with consumers. Of course, this isn’t always the case. With the push for greater transparency for financial disclosures, I urge the Senate President to fast track my two pieces of legislation so they can join Senator Singleton’s bill in order to promote a fairer society.”
