Roseville Community Charter School Continues on their Journey of Academic Recovery by Partnering with NJ Tutoring Corps

Statistical Data Shows Students Producing Significant Results in Learning

NEWARK, NJ – May 15, 2023 – Roseville Community Charter School (RCCS) is continuing on their journey of academic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic with a new partnership with NJ Tutoring Corps. The organization partnered with RCCS this school year for an after-school tutoring program to help students falling behind bounce back to grade level.

“I am so glad we are continuing our partnership with NJ Tutoring Corps,” said Dr. Dionne Ledford, Executive Director of RCCS. “We have seen a great difference in the students who have been receiving extra assistance and look forward to seeing the continued success of those participating.”

The program continues to be successful throughout this academic year of implementation, as evidenced by 70% of students hitting the academic milestones per their grade level. In addition, after 10-weeks of targeted tutoring, mid-point data as compared to baseline data previously collected showed that Grade 2 achieved 103% median growth in ELA; Grade 3 achieved 50% median growth in Math, and Grade 4 achieved 87% median growth in Math.

In December, RCCS tested students in second, third, and fourth grade to identify those needing extra assistance in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. Through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funding, 160 scholars were found eligible to receive four days per week of targeted tutoring; two days for ELA and two days for Math.

Each tutoring program is designed specifically to help the students’ needs. With the help of the instruction platform iReady, tutoring sessions are documented to record each student’s milestones to make sure each student makes good progress towards mastery of set targets. Once proficiency is achieved, the program moves the students onto the next level of targeted instruction to help their academic needs.

Abigail, a current third grade student at RCCS, praised the tutoring program citing it has increased her learning outside the classroom.

“Everyone at NJ Tutoring Corps has been really nice,” said Abigail. “Even though I know a lot, the tutors make me feel smarter and have so much to share.”

TJ Best, Senior Advisor at the New Jersey Public Charter Schools Association (NJPCSA) explained that keeping students at minority-majority schools on grade-level since the pandemic has been a priority of the organization.

“High-impact tutoring programs, such as the one at RCCS, have been vital to accelerating student growth out of the pandemic” explained Best. “Partnerships like this one at schools that largely serve minority students are vital for their academic and professional future, and NJPCSA is proud to support the data-driven efforts of RCCS and other public charter schools to keep their students on track for success.”
